However, each regular maintenance, as well as day- to- day care, is more important than ever before to ensure smooth, trouble- free, safe, and economical drivings. Note that both the new vehicle and emission control system warranties specify that proper maintenance and care must be performed.
General maintenance General maintenance items are those dayto- day care practices that are important to your vehicle for proper operation. These checks or inspections can be done either by yourself or a qualified technician, or if you prefer, your Toyota dealer will be pleased to do them at a nominal cost. Toyota technicians are well- trained specialists and are kept up to date with the latest service information through technical bulletins, service tips, and in- dealership training programs.
They learn to work on Toyotas before they work on your vehicle, rather than while they are working on it. It is recommended that any replacement parts used for maintenance or for the repair of the emission control system be Toyota supplied. The owner may elect to use non- Toyota supplied parts for replacement purposes without invalidating the emission control system warranty.
However, use of replacement parts which are not of equivalent quality may impair the effectiveness of the emission control systems. Your copy of the repair order is proof that all required maintenance has been performed for warranty coverage. And if any problems should arise with your vehicle while under warranty, your Toyota dealer will promptly take care of it. Again, be sure to keep a copy of the repair order for any service performed on your Toyota.
You may also elect to have maintenance, replacement, or repair of the emission control devices and system performed by any automotive repair establishment or individual without invalidating this warranty. What about do- it- yourself maintenance? Many of the maintenance items are easy to do yourself if you have a little mechanical ability and a few basic automotive tools. Simple instructions for how to perform them are presented in Section 7. Please be aware that do- it- yourself maintenance can affect your warranty coverage.
Listed below are the general maintenance items that should be performed as frequently as specified. In addition to checking the items listed, if you notice any unusual noise, smell or vibration, you should investigate the cause or take your vehicle to your Toyota dealer or a qualified service shop immediately.
It is recommended that any problem you notice be brought to the attention of your dealer or the qualified service shop for their advice. Tire surface and wheel nuts Check the tires carefully for cuts, damage or excessive wear.
See Section 7- 2 for additional information. When checking the tires, make sure no nuts are missing, and check the nuts for looseness. Tighten them if necessary. If you smell fuel fumes or notice any leak, have the cause found and corrected immediately. Make these checks only where adequate ventilation can be obtained if you run the engine. Tire pressure Check the pressure with a gauge every two weeks, or at least once a month. Tire rotation Rotate the tires every km miles. Doors and engine hood Check that all doors including trunk lid operate smoothly and all latches lock securely.
Make sure the engine hood secondary latch secures the hood from opening when the primary latch is released. Check headlight aim. Steering wheel Be alert for changes in steering condition, such as hard steering or strange noise. Seats Check that all front seat controls such as seat adjusters, seatback recliner, etc. Check that the head restraints move up and down smoothly and that the locks hold securely in any latched position.
For folding- down rear seatbacks, check that the latches lock securely. Seat belts Check that the seat belt system buckles, retractors and anchors properly and smoothly. Make sure belt webbings are not cut, frayed, damaged. Clutch pedal Check the pedal for smooth operation. Brake pedal Check the pedal for smooth operation and that the pedal has the proper clearance.
Check the brake booster function. Brakes At a safe place, check that the brakes do not pull to one side when applied. Parking brake Check that the lever has the proper travel and that, on a safe incline, your vehicle is held securely with only the parking brake applied.
Washer fluid Make sure there is sufficient fluid in the tank. See Section 7- 3 for additional information. Battery electrolyte level Make sure the electrolyte level of all battery cells is between upper and lower level lines on the case. Add only distilled water when replenishing. Brake fluid level Make sure the brake fluid level is correct.
Engine oil level Check the level on the dipstick with the engine turned off and the vehicle parked on a level spot. Power steering fluid level Check the level through the reservoir. Exhaust system If you notice any change in the sound of the exhaust or smell exhaust fumes, have the cause located and corrected immediately.

DOT quality grades—All passenger vehicle tires must conform to Federal Safety Requirements in addition to these grades. These quality grades are molded on the sidewall. Treadwear—The treadwear grade is a comparative rating based on the wear rate of the tire when tested under controlled conditions on a specified government test course.
The relative performance of tires depends upon the actual conditions of their use, however, and may depart significantly from the norm due to variations in driving habits, service practices and differences in road characteristics and climate. A tire marked C may have poor traction performance. Warning: The temperature grades for this tire are established for a tire that is properly inflated and not overloaded. Excessive speed, underinflation, or excessive loading, either separately or in combination, can cause heat buildup and possible tire failure.
Warning: The traction grade assigned to this tire is based on braking straight ahead traction tests and does not include cornering turning traction. Sustained high temperature can cause the material of the tire to degenerate and reduce tire life, and excessive temperature can lead to sudden tire failure.
The grade C corresponds to a level of performance which all passenger car tires must meet under the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. Grades B and A represent higher levels of performance on the laboratory test wheel than the minimum required by law. Keep the plate in a safe place such as your wallet, not in the vehicle.
Insert the key into the keyhole and turn it. If you should lose your keys or if you need additional keys, duplicates can be made by a Toyota dealer using the key number.

The system will automatically be set after the preparation time passes. The indicator light will flash to show the system is set. If any of the doors, trunk or hood is open at that time, the setting is interrupted until it is closed and locked. Never leave anyone in the vehicle when you set the system, because unlocking from the inside will activate the system.
Reactivating the alarm Once set, the system automatically resets the alarm each time all the doors, trunk and hood are closed after the alarm stops. The alarm will be stopped with the starter circuit cut kept on. Stopping the alarm in this manner will keep the alarm from being reactivated when any of the doors, trunk or hood is opened. The indicator light three indications. Interrupting the setting With the system set, the trunk can be opened with the key without activating or cancelling the system.
While it is open, the doors and hood may be opened in addition. However, when the battery terminal is disconnected and then reconnected, the system is activated. To resume the setting, close and lock all the doors, trunk and hood. The trunk must be closed with the key removed. This cancels the system completely and the starter circuit cut will be cancelled at once.

If the system does not work properly, have it checked by your Toyota dealer. If the indicator lamp does not go off, contact your Toyota dealer as soon as possible.
To open the fuel filler door, pull the lever up. When refueling, turn off the engine. The fumes are flammable. In hot weather, fuel under pressure could cause injury by spraying out of the filler neck if the cap is suddenly removed. To remove the fuel tank cap, turn the cap slowly counterclockwise, then pause slightly before removing it. After removing the cap, hang it on the cap hanger. It has a builtin check valve to reduce fuel tank vacuum.
It is not unusual to hear a slight swoosh when the cap is opened. When installing, turn the cap clockwise till you hear a click.
If the cap is not tightened securely, the malfunction indicator lamp comes on. Make sure the cap is tightened securely. You may stop the moon roof at any desired position.
