Have you tried resetting to default settings? Go to the start menu an find the "run" box and type inetcpl. After the reset try and run IE again, if it crashes again try running IE without addons and see if it works then. If you are unable to find the "no addon" version of IE in the start menu you can type iexplore. If it runs ok with no addons disable any strange addons in the advanced tab.
I would also try a virus scan and adware scan. Didn't think about resetting IE from internet options in control panel. Will try that as well before adding any new versions to his computer.
